Overview

Inspire by Sbarduno has recently been delivering Science lecture sessions for Primary Education Students and Primary and Secondary PGCE students at Bangor University. During these sessions ideas for simple experiments and tasks that can be delivered in the classroom have been shared, as well as offering support. Awen will continue to lecture at the University during the new academic year 2021-2022.

Training

The training sessions allows Awen to discuss her personal experiences, to share information about the world of education and industry, as well as showing how it’s possible to integrate both together. From September 2022, schools in Wales will follow Curriculum For Wales, and Awen is now offering opportunities for schools to receive training sessions which show how to integrate the Scientific experiments to every aspect of the new Curriculum. The training sessions can be tailored to meet the needs of the partners, schools, organizations and companies.

Mentoring

Being able to mentor young people is of great interest to Awen, as it gives her the opportunity to talk about her personal experience of establishing Inspire by Sbarduno and stepping into the self-employed world. It also gives her the chance to inspire young people, encourage them to venture on their own, highlight what’s important in the business world, the necessary skills, and most importantly to be confident and believe in their own success.

Since establishing Inspire by Sbarduno, Awen has been a role model for Big Ideas Wales, and regularly hosts sessions about how to start your own business, by focusing on how she went about establishing Inspire by Sbarduno. Awen has participated in a number of online events during the past year, by mentoring, supporting and participating in sessions and is looking forward to starting taking part in face-to-face sessions again soon.

Awen will be working in partnership with Careers Wales through the Careers Wales Exchange. Here she will be able to offer mentoring sessions, support world of work events, career sessions and webinars throughout Wales. Inspire by Sbarduno will continue to work in partnership with Careers Wales through the STEM Gogledd provision, offering workshops for the Primary and Secondary schools.

The course objectives were:

- build confidence to deliver simple experiments with the children
- better understanding of Science
- help the children in their care to learn the basic principles of Science
- to inspire them and to have fun!

At the end of the course
they were able to:

- see the link between everyday life, so that the children can see how important and relevant Science is to their world
- inspire children to have an interest in Science from an early age
- deliver fun and safe experiments
- encourage the development of other important skills such as problem solving, teamwork and independent work

Training

In partnership with Mudiad Meithrin, Inspire By Sbarduno led training sessions to the staff of Cylchoedd Meithrin Cymru, where they received the opportunity to learn about Science in the early years. It was a practical course, which gave the participants the opportunity to have a go at the simple Science experiments that they could deliver themselves in their Cylch. The workshop gave an insight to the new ways of presenting Science by using simple equipment. With the new Curriculum for Wales in the pipeline, Science and Technology has been named as one of the six areas of learning and speciality.

Workshops for Partners

Working in partnership with Hunaniaith, Inspire by Sbarduno has delivered a number of fun, online workshops for the whole family. They were extremely successful as they showed not only the children, but the parents as well that there’s so much fun to be had with Science.

Inspire by Sbarduno has supported the Innovate Event which was held by STEM Gogledd and Careers Wales for the Secondary pupils at Anglesey schools. A number of STEM businesses came together to set each group a challenge. They were given 20 minutes at each stand to solve the problem before moving on to the next STEM business.

We are proud to be able to work in partnership with other partners to tailor workshops to meet their business needs. We work together with existing provisions, such as the Bright Sparks programme which is sponsored by Scottish Power, and delivered in partnership with North and Mid Wales Reaching Wider Partnership.

Inspire by Sbarduno has worked in partnership with Anglesey Libraries to host and deliver the Colours Workshop during the summer holidays. It was held at Llangefni Library. It was a practical session with the young people learning about the chromatography of colours, creating a lava lamp and the chromatography of Skittles / m&m’s.

Inspire by Sbarduno has also delivered the STEM for All challenge for the Slate Museum in Llanberis, which was specifically for young people and their families. There was a lot of fun in learning, creating and developing everyday skills.

Inset days
training sessions

Awen will be busy delivering a number of Inset Day Training Sessions in schools throughout Wales during the new academic year. The sessions will show how to transfer the Science experiments from the current Curriculum to Curriculum for Wales, which will be in place from September 2022. They’re practical, fun and educational sessions which allow teachers to be the learner, and allow time to plan and work with other teachers. These training sessions can be tailored to meet the needs of the school.
